I recently had a perfect example of why it is worth tracking records you hope to find and touch base with them once and a while. People have been trying to find records about one of my ancestors, Major John McDonald, for many many years. Everywhere they went they got stuck and were not able to find his birth records in Scotland. They logically concluded that his family had been from the Isle of Barra, but he might have been born in Perthshire Scotland. I recently tried again, after never finding the information before...and eureka! I found a transcription of the record on one site and then was able to find a scan of the actual document (WORD OF ADVICE-never take a transcription as truth...people make mistakes in transcriptions all the time.....read the record for yourself!).
